31 December 2001

All month people in the city have been saying “Happy Holidays” and “Merry Christmas” with what sounds like a touch of resignation, or at least tired determination. But today was 31 December, and when they said “Happy New Year” they meant it — one more day and we’re outta here. There was definite joy afoot, and a new calendar is one of the best presents anyone could have gotten. I’m going out to burn my old ones now; hope your celebration is equally heartfelt.
