Ever wonder why most computers are beige? They’re beige because Betty Holberton said so. Ms. Holberton, a computing pioneer, passed away late last year at age 84, and I’m dreadfully embarrassed that I knew very little about this early usability trailblazer (who made many more significant contributions than box color, trust me) before I read her obituary. But I thank her for a final gift: Next time I hear someone babbling on about the pretty iMacs, I can look ’em in the eye and tell ’em Steve Jobs is a sexist ass. That ought to lively up the discussion. (Won’t work on Steve, though; he’s heard it too often already.)
