Call this the rationalization of a spectacularly difficult person, but doesn’t it seem like some of these characteristics for bad friends are kind of… subjective? Who’s to say that the overly meddlesome friend (introvert-speak for ‘person with an opinion on everything and no off switch’) is just as bad as the loner (extrovert-speak for ‘person who needs lots of quiet time’)? I remember when I was a girl, people had these things called “idiosyncracies.” (In fact, I’m got a big ol’ stockpile right here.) I think it’s lovely that the psychologists are getting around to studying friendship, but as usual they’ll now devote their efforts to building little boxes to rank, file, and otherwise categorize it all. Ptui.
